Bridge beams successfully installed at Duinefontein and Govan Mbeki Roads intersection

The City of Cape Town's Urban Mobility Directorate has successfully completed the installation of the large pre-cast concrete bridge beams at the Duinefontein Road and Govan Mbeki Road intersection. The operation involved the delivery and lifting of beams measuring approximately 36 metres in length and weighing around 40 tonnes each using heavy-duty cranes from Saturday, 1 August 2026, until Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

'The successful installation of these bridge beams marks another important milestone in the construction of the new Duinefontein Bridge and the MyCiTi Phase 2A project. I would like to thank residents, commuters and motorists for their patience and cooperation during the temporary road closures. These upgrades are bringing us closer to delivering a safe, reliable and integrated public transport system that will better connect communities across the metro south-east and ensure that we keep Cape Town moving,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The bridge forms part of the MyCiTi Phase 2A project, which will connect commuters from Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and surrounding communities with Claremont and Wynberg.
